Sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Read every day. 20 minutes is all it takes to make prepare kids for school. Read while you wait for appointments, in the car line at school pick-up or make it a part of bedtime. Choose books with rhymes, engaging pictures, and about familiar routines. Ask questions. Reading is not only about the words on the page. Ask questions, talk about the illustrations, and retell stories together. There are so many ways to read a story together. For more read aloud tips visit the Reading Rockets Parents Page. Play matters. Play builds brains. Whether it is jumping in puddles, playing dress-up, or cooking together, play is how children learn. Visit the Morley Library’s Early Literacy Play Area for age-appropriate toys and literacy activities. Set an example. To raise a reader, be a reader. Kids love to mimic what parents do. Take advantage and show them how fun reading is.
